Mary is shocked by Martha’s thick Yorkshire dialect and casual, direct manner. Martha is shocked that Mary is helpless to dress herself and is wasteful of eating good food, when her own numerous siblings may go hungry. Where we pick up, Martha has encouraged Mary to walk around outside.
